Hank Greenberg was an American baseball first baseman and one of the sport's first Jewish superstars, twice named American League MVP and hitting 58 home runs in 1938. In 1934, while the Detroit Tigers were in a pennant race, he famously refused to play on Yom Kippur, an act celebrated as a stand for Jewish identity. He was the son of Romanian-Jewish immigrants and was later elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
