Origins and early life
Gustave Halphen was born in the old third arrondissement of Paris on 3 March 1810, son of Salomon Halphen and of Malka Cahen, in the Jewish Halphen family that produced within two generations bankers, a mayor of a Paris arrondissement, judges and a regent of the Bank of France.
Work and career
He was a merchant and a diplomat, and served until 1853 as consul general of the Sublime Porte in Paris — the Ottoman Empire's chief representative for commercial affairs in the French capital, an appointment that says something about the trading networks a Paris Jewish house could reach across the Mediterranean. From 1852 to 1857 he was president of the Israelite Consistory of Paris, the administrative body of the city's Jewish community, succeeding the physician Moïse Cahen.
Recognition
He held the Legion of Honour as an officer, and was a commander of the Spanish order of Isabella the Catholic and holder of the Ottoman Nichan Iftikhar, three states' decorations on one Jewish merchant of the July Monarchy. He died in the ninth arrondissement of Paris on 21 February 1872. The judge Achille Halphen, whose name the Prix Halphen carries, was of the same family.
