Gus Kahn was a German-born American lyricist and one of the most prolific songwriters of the Tin Pan Alley and early-Hollywood eras, writing words for standards such as "Makin' Whoopee," "It Had to Be You" and "Dream a Little Dream of Me." His lyrics for One Night of Love (1934) helped it win the first Academy Award for Best Scoring. He was born into a Jewish family in Koblenz that emigrated to Chicago in 1891.
