Gurvitch was a Russian-born French sociologist known for the sociology of law and for his theory of 'depth levels' of social reality, which analysed society as layered from visible institutions to deep collective experience. After emigrating from revolutionary Russia he became a central figure of French sociology, founding the Cahiers internationaux de sociologie. He was born to a Jewish family in Novorossiysk and settled permanently in France.
