Bayonne, New Jersey
George Raymond Richard Martin was born on 20 September 1948 in Bayonne, New Jersey, into a working-class family. He was raised Catholic, and grew up sure of the story the family told: that his father's father was Louis, an Italian.
A Song of Ice and Fire
In 1996 he published A Game of Thrones, the first volume of A Song of Ice and Fire. The HBO series drawn from it, Game of Thrones (2011–2019), carried his invented continents into hundreds of millions of homes and made him one of the most-read living authors in the world.
The discovery of 2019
On the season-five premiere of PBS's Finding Your Roots, in January 2019, the DNA spoke: no Italian blood at all, and 22.4 per cent Ashkenazi Jewish — the share of one grandparent. The programme's researchers concluded that his father's father was not Louis the Italian but an Ashkenazi Jewish man with whom his grandmother Grace had an affair — a man whose name is not known. This card states it plainly, as the rule of this directory requires: Martin was raised Catholic, learned of this Jewish grandfather at seventy, and the man remains unidentified; he enters the directory by the ascendance route — one Jewish grandparent, documented by the test and told by Martin himself.
