Garrett Reisman is recognized among Jewish contributors to Exploration & Discovery — First Jewish crew member of the International Space Station; three spacewalks, later director of crew operations at SpaceX.
Origins and early life
Garrett Reisman was born in Morristown, New Jersey, to a Jewish family — the plain, sourced statement this card rests on — and grew up in Parsippany. He took a dual degree in economics and mechanical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania in 1991, then a doctorate at Caltech in 1997, sharing an adviser with Bob Behnken, alongside whom he would later fly.
Work and career
Before space came the sea: fourteen days on the floor of the Atlantic in the Aquarius laboratory for NEEMO 5 in 2003. He launched on STS-123 on 11 March 2008, stayed aboard the International Space Station as flight engineer through parts of Expeditions 16 and 17, and came home on STS-124 on 14 June — the first Jewish crew member the station had had. From orbit that May he sent a greeting to the people of Israel for the country's sixtieth Independence Day.
He flew again on STS-132 in May 2010 and walked outside twice more. In 2011 he joined SpaceX, rising to director of crew operations, work that helped put astronauts back in American spacecraft; since 2018 he has taught human spaceflight at the University of Southern California. He is also the astronaut who proved, in the empty Kibo module, that a human being cannot swim in weightlessness.
