Gamaliel the Elder was a leading Pharisee sage and president (nasi) of the Sanhedrin in first-century Jerusalem, grandson of the great sage Hillel. He was renowned for his legal rulings easing the burden of Jewish law, and the New Testament names him as the teacher of Paul of Tarsus and as urging tolerance toward the early Christians.
