Gabriel Almond was an American political scientist who helped found the modern comparative study of political culture, most notably through The Civic Culture (1963), and who received the APSA's James Madison Award in 1981. Born to Russian- and Ukrainian-Jewish immigrants, he was raised in a strict Orthodox Jewish home, the son and grandson of rabbis. His frameworks reshaped the systematic study of comparative politics.
