How & why

Ferenc Fricsay was a Hungarian conductor of Jewish heritage, a pupil of Bartók and Kodály, who became one of the most admired orchestral and operatic conductors of the postwar era and a pioneering recording artist for Deutsche Grammophon. He led the RIAS Symphony Orchestra in Berlin and appeared with leading ensembles across Europe and America before his early death. His recordings remain benchmarks of interpretation.
