Fabien Sevitzky

Fabien Sevitzky, born Faviy Koussevitzky into the Jewish Koussevitzky family of double-bass virtuosos, was a Russian-American conductor and the nephew of Serge Koussevitzky. He shortened his surname to avoid accusations of nepotism and built his own career, notably as music director of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra from 1937 to 1955. He championed American composers and raised the Indianapolis ensemble to national attention.
