Eugene Braunwald was widely regarded as the father of modern cardiovascular medicine, transforming the understanding and treatment of heart failure and heart attacks and editing the standard textbook 'Braunwald's Heart Disease'. His trials established early, aggressive treatment of myocardial infarction. Born into a Jewish family in Vienna, he fled the Nazi annexation of Austria in 1938 and emigrated to the United States.
