Ernst Gräfenberg's father headed the Jewish community of Adelebsen. Working in Berlin, he developed in 1929 the first practical intrauterine contraceptive device, the silver Gräfenberg ring, and published on the physiology of the female urethra. As a Jew he was forced out of his hospital post in 1933, was imprisoned, and reached New York in 1940 after Margaret Sanger arranged his ransom; he practised there until his death.
