Eric Dane was born Eric William Melvin in San Francisco in 1972; he and his brother were raised in their mother's Jewish faith and he had a bar mitzvah. He became widely known as Mark Sloan in Grey's Anatomy, played Captain Tom Chandler across five seasons of The Last Ship, and Cal Jacobs in HBO's Euphoria. In April 2025 he made public that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, speaking openly about the disease while continuing to work; he died of respiratory failure related to ALS on 19 February 2026, at fifty-three.
