How & why

Enrico Macias (born Gaston Ghrenassia) is an Algerian-born French singer and guitarist who, drawing on the Judeo-Andalusian and Arab-Andalusian music of his native Constantine, became a hugely popular figure of French chanson from the 1960s onward. Forced to leave Algeria in 1961, he never returned. He comes from the Sephardi Jewish community of Constantine, and his father-in-law was the renowned malouf musician Cheikh Raymond.
