Eleazar Sukenik was the archaeologist who understood what the Dead Sea Scrolls were. He recognised their importance, worked to have the state acquire them, and in 1948 published the research linking them to the Essenes that became the scholarly consensus. He helped found the archaeology department at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and directed its Museum of Jewish Antiquities. Born in Białystok under the Russian Empire, he emigrated to Ottoman-ruled Palestine in 1912, working first as a schoolteacher and guide. His son Yigael Yadin continued his work; another son, Mati, was killed as an air force pilot in 1948.
