Edward Ullendorff was a British scholar of Semitic and Ethiopian languages, a leading authority on Ethiopic (Ge'ez), Amharic and the history of Ethiopian Christianity, long based at SOAS in London. Born into a secular Jewish family in Berlin, he studied in Jerusalem and served in Mandatory Palestine before his academic career in Britain. The British Academy named a medal in his honour.
