Edward Israel was the astronomer of the Greely Lady Franklin Bay Expedition (1881–1884), whose careful observations helped fix positions in the mapping of Ellesmere Island and northern Greenland during a major polar scientific effort. He died of starvation with most of the party at Cape Sabine in 1884. The son of some of the first Jewish settlers of Kalamazoo, he was Jewish.
