Son of German Jewish immigrants, Edward Filene turned his father's Boston store into a retail laboratory — the Automatic Bargain Basement marked prices down by the calendar, and his employees got a credit union, arbitration and a minimum wage decades early. His greater monument is invisible: he bankrolled and organized the American credit-union movement, which today counts over a hundred million members, and founded the Twentieth Century Fund for economic research. He called it 'making money work for welfare'.
