Edith Windsor was an American LGBT-rights activist and former IBM technologist whose lawsuit, United States v. Windsor (2013), led the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act, a landmark for marriage equality. She was Jewish, born to a Jewish family in Philadelphia, and sued after being denied a spousal estate-tax exemption on her late wife's inheritance. Her case reshaped federal recognition of same-sex marriage.
