Donald Brown is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Developmental biologist who pioneered the isolation and study of individual genes
A founder of molecular embryology, Brown spent his career at the Carnegie Institution's Department of Embryology in Baltimore, which he also directed. Using the frog Xenopus, he pioneered 'developmental genetics by gene isolation' — physically purifying individual animal genes (such as the ribosomal RNA genes) to study their structure and control — a template for modern gene research. He came from a Jewish family.
