Biography

Denis Gabor is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Nobel laureate in Physics (1971) for inventing holography. Hungarian-Jewish physicist.

How & why

Dennis Gabor was a Hungarian-British electrical engineer and physicist who invented holography in 1947, a wavefront-reconstruction method for recording and reproducing three-dimensional images, for which he received the 1971 Nobel Prize in Physics. His idea, fully realized only after the invention of the laser, underpins modern 3D imaging, data storage and optical security. He was born into a Hungarian-Jewish family and fled Nazi Germany for Britain.
