David E. Shaw, a former Columbia University computer science professor, founded the hedge fund D. E. Shaw & Co. in 1988 and pioneered the use of sophisticated quantitative and computational methods in securities trading. He later applied that computing expertise to biochemistry through D. E. Shaw Research. He was born into a Reform Jewish family and was raised Jewish.
