Origins and early life
David Salomons was born on 22 November 1797 in London, into a Jewish family of the City, and lived and died a Jew — which is the whole point of his life.
Work and career
A banker, one of the founders of the London and Westminster Bank in 1832, he set himself to break, one by one, the barriers that kept Jews out of British public life. In 1835 he was elected the first Jewish sheriff of London, and Parliament had to pass a law so that he could take office; he became the first Jewish magistrate in Britain and the first Jewish alderman of the City, after two elections were annulled because he would not swear a Christian oath.
Later years
In 1851 he was elected to the House of Commons for Greenwich, took his seat, spoke and voted without the oath 'on the true faith of a Christian' — and was fined and removed, a defiance that forced the question of Jewish emancipation on the nation until the law changed in 1858, when he returned to Parliament and sat until his death. In 1855 he became the first Jewish Lord Mayor of London. Made a baronet in 1869, he died on 18 July 1873, having opened the doors of England's civic life to those who came after him.
