Biography

David Finkelstein is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Physicist; understanding of the black hole event horizon

How & why

David Finkelstein was an American physicist whose 1958 paper introduced the coordinate system (now called Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates) that first clearly revealed the one-way nature of a black hole's event horizon, a turning point in general relativity. He later worked on quantum logic, spacetime structure and a discrete 'quantum' foundation for physics, and taught at Yeshiva University and the Georgia Institute of Technology. He was Jewish.
