How & why

Daryl Katz was born into a Jewish family in Edmonton and went to Talmud Torah, the city's Jewish day school. A lawyer by training, he acquired the franchise rights to Rexall and built the Katz Group into one of Canada's largest privately owned companies. He bought the Edmonton Oilers in 2008 and drove the Ice District, the largest mixed-use development in western Canada, around the new Rogers Place arena. He gave $20 million to Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto for the Daryl A. Katz Centre for Urgent and Critical Care and $10 million towards homelessness in Edmonton.
