Wasserman was an American playwright best known for writing the book of Man of La Mancha (1965), which won the Tony Award for Best Musical, and the stage adaptation of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Largely self-taught, he began as a lighting designer and director before writing. He was the son of Russian Jewish immigrants and grew up an orphan in Wisconsin.
