Origins and early life
Charlotte Gainsbourg was born on 21 July 1971 in London, the daughter of Serge Gainsbourg and of the English actress Jane Birkin. Her father, born Lucien Ginsburg, was the son of Joseph Ginsburg and Olga Besman, Russian Jews who had fled the Bolshevik revolution for Paris, and the professional genealogists have traced the line; she figures in this directory by that documented Jewish father, and this fiche says plainly that she was not raised in the Jewish religion — while she has spoken publicly of the antisemitism her father suffered as a child under the Occupation, the yellow star, the neighbors frightened to learn the family was Jewish, and of the star of David that had belonged to her grandmother and that he gave her.
Work and career
Her own career began at thirteen: a César for most promising actress for L'Effrontée in 1986, then a long path of daring choices in French and international cinema — with Claude Miller, Franco Zeffirelli, Michel Gondry, Todd Haynes — until the Best Actress award at Cannes in 2009 for Lars von Trier's Antichrist, and the films that followed with him. As a singer, the albums 5:55 (2006), IRM (2009, with Beck) and Rest (2017) gave her a voice of her own beside her father's. She lives between Paris and New York.
