Carl Icahn is one of the pioneers of activist investing, taking large stakes in public companies from the 1970s onward to force strategic and management changes. Through Icahn Enterprises he became a leading corporate raider and one of the wealthiest investors in America. He was born into a Jewish family in New York and raised in Far Rockaway, Queens.
