Fanny "Bobbie" Rosenfeld was born into a Jewish family in the Russian Empire in 1904 and grew up in Ontario. At the 1928 Amsterdam Games — the first open to women in athletics — she won gold in the 4×100 metres relay and silver in the 100 metres, and famously ran alongside an exhausted teammate in the 800 to bring her home. She played hockey, softball, basketball and tennis at provincial level, and in 1950 Canadian sportswriters voted her the country's woman athlete of the half-century.
