Betty Friedan was an American writer and activist whose 1963 book The Feminine Mystique is widely credited with igniting second-wave feminism in the United States. She co-founded the National Organization for Women (NOW) in 1966 and served as its first president. Born Bettye Naomi Goldstein to a Jewish family in Illinois, she often linked her activism to experiences of antisemitism in her youth.
