Bernard Haitink is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Orchestra conductor
Bernard Haitink was a Dutch conductor of partial Jewish ancestry — his mother was half-Jewish, and the family survived the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. He led the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra for a quarter-century and later the London Philharmonic, Glyndebourne, the Royal Opera House and the Chicago Symphony, becoming renowned for unshowy, deeply musical interpretations of Bruckner, Mahler and Beethoven. His modesty and integrity made him one of the most admired conductors of his generation.
