Ben Barnes is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — English actor: Prince Caspian in the Narnia films, Logan Delos in Westworld, Billy Russo in The Punisher and General Kirigan in Shadow and Bone.
Origins and early life
Ben Barnes was born Benjamin Thomas Barnes on 20 August 1981 in south-west London, to Patricia Becker, a relationship psychotherapist, and Thomas Barnes, a psychiatrist and professor; he has a younger brother, Jack. He names his mother's Jewish South African childhood among the things that formed him, alongside his father's scientific training and a school he found vaguely Christian where he liked the hymns — that maternal line is the route by which he appears here.
Work and career
Music came first: he joined the National Youth Music Theatre at sixteen and played drums in a West End Bugsy Malone in 1997, sang in choirs and played piano in jazz orchestras, and in 2004 took a first in drama and English literature at Kingston University, the first drama student there to manage it. He was briefly in a boy band, Hyrise, which tried for the British entry to the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest, and then made his name on stage as Dakin in The History Boys in the West End in 2006.
His first film was Stardust in 2007, and the year after came the part that fixed his face in a generation's memory: the title role in The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, which he played again in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in 2010. Around them came Easy Virtue opposite Colin Firth, the title role in Dorian Gray, and Stephen Wraysford in Trevor Nunn's stage Birdsong. Television has given him his longest parts — Logan Delos in Westworld from 2016, Billy Russo in Netflix's The Punisher, for which he consulted his psychotherapist parents to keep the character honest, General Kirigan in Shadow and Bone from 2021, and Tim Jamieson in The Institute in 2025.
He has kept the music too, releasing the EP Songs For You in October 2021 and a first album, Where The Light Gets In, in January 2025.
