Avraam Benaroya is recognized among Jewish contributors to Civil Rights & Human Rights — Founder of the Socialist Workers' Federation of Salonica and of the Greek labor movement
Origins and early life
Avraam Benaroya was born in 1887 in Vidin, in Bulgaria, into a Sephardi Jewish family, and made his life in Salonica, the Jewish metropolis of the Ottoman Balkans where Ladino was the language of the docks and the tobacco warehouses.
Work and career
A printer and a teacher, he founded there in 1909, in the flush of the Young Turk revolution, the Socialist Workers' Federation — the Federación — which organized the Jewish, Greek, Bulgarian and Turkish workers of the city and became the most powerful socialist party of the Ottoman Empire, with its newspapers in four languages. When Salonica became Greek in 1912, he carried the movement into the new country: in 1918 he was a key founder of the Socialist Workers' Party of Greece, the forerunner of the Greek Communist Party, and of the General Confederation of Greek Workers, the country's trade-union federation to this day. Too independent for the Bolshevized party, he was expelled from it in 1924 and jailed by successive governments.
Later years
He survived the Nazi occupation in forced-labor camps, one of the few of his community, and in 1953 emigrated to Israel, where he lived in Holon, forgotten, until his death on 16 May 1979 — the founder of Greek labor, a Jew of Salonica.
