How & why

Arthur Coleman Danto was an American philosopher and art critic, long a professor at Columbia University, best known for his philosophy of art (notably his idea of the 'artworld' and the 'end of art') and his work on the philosophy of history. His encounter with Andy Warhol's Brillo Boxes prompted his influential question of what separates an artwork from an ordinary object. He was Jewish.
