How & why

Origins and early life

Armand Fleischman, born Heymann Fleischman in the fourth arrondissement of Paris on 13 October 1886, died in the thirteenth on 13 August 1973, at the age of eighty-six.

Work and career

He served in the infantry in the First World War as a sergeant major and came back with the military medal and the Croix de guerre. He became president of the Jewish National Fund of Paris in 1923 and was designated in 1924 as the first president of the Jewish National Fund for the whole of France, the body that collected the small coins of ordinary families to buy and plant land in the Land of Israel.

Later years

In 1931 he founded a place of worship in the rue des Écouffes, in the heart of the Pletzl, the Yiddish-speaking quarter of the Marais, and named it the oratory Roger Fleischman in memory of his son, who had died at nineteen. The oratory was a house of prayer and of religious instruction; independent at first, it later joined the network of the Consistoire central. His other son, Cyrille Fleischman, became a writer whose whole work is a portrait of that quarter and of the people who lived in it, so that the father built the place and the son kept its memory.
