Biography

Anthony Mann is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Director of the psychological westerns with James Stewart — Winchester '73, The Naked Spur, The Man from Laramie — and of the film noir cycle that preceded them

How & why

Anthony Mann's mother was an American of Bavarian Jewish descent. After a run of tautly photographed films noirs he made five westerns with James Stewart in the 1950s that turned the genre inward, giving it a hero driven by grievance and shame; they are among the most studied films of the American studio era. He later directed El Cid and The Fall of the Roman Empire.
