Anne Sinclair

Origins and early life

Anne Sinclair was born Anne-Élise Schwartz on 15 July 1948 in New York, into a Franco-American Jewish family on both sides — her father later took the name Sinclair.

Work and career

Her maternal grandfather was Paul Rosenberg, the great Paris art dealer of Picasso, Braque and Matisse, whose gallery at 21 rue La Boétie was confiscated under the Occupation and turned into the seat of the Institute for the Study of Jewish Questions; her paternal grandfather, Léonce Schwartz, was arrested in the roundup of Jewish notables in Paris in December 1941, the group from which the first deportation convoy from France to Auschwitz was drawn.

She has documented both in her own books — 21 rue La Boétie (2012), where she writes of Rosenberg that 'he was French, Jewish and in love with the arts', and La rafle des notables (2020). Her career made her the face of French political journalism: from 1984 to 1997 she hosted 7 sur 7 on TF1, the Sunday interview through which a generation of leaders passed, and from 2012 to 2020 she was editorial director of the French edition of the Huffington Post.
