Karlin is an American theoretical computer scientist, the Microsoft Professor at the University of Washington, known for the design and analysis of online, probabilistic and randomized algorithms, including foundational work on algorithms for web caching and algorithmic game theory. She received the ACM Paris Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award in 2020 and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. She is Jewish, the daughter of the mathematician Samuel Karlin.
