How & why

Andrew Goodman was a young Jewish American activist from New York who volunteered for the 1964 Freedom Summer voter-registration drive in Mississippi. Alongside James Chaney and fellow Jewish activist Michael Schwerner, he was abducted and murdered by Ku Klux Klan members near Philadelphia, Mississippi. Their deaths galvanized national support for the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act.
