Biography

Alejandro Jodorowsky is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Filmmaker and comics writer; El Topo, The Holy Mountain, The Incal

How & why

Alejandro Jodorowsky made 'El Topo' (1970) and 'The Holy Mountain' (1973), the films that invented the midnight-movie circuit, and wrote 'The Incal' with Mœbius — among the most influential graphic novels in Europe — followed by 'The Metabarons' and 'The Technopriests'. His unmade 'Dune' reshaped science-fiction design for decades. He was born in Tocopilla, Chile, to Ukrainian Jewish immigrant parents, Jaime Jodorowsky Groismann and Sara Prullansky Arcavi, from Yekaterinoslav and Yelisavetgrad; they concealed their Jewish identity through much of his childhood, and he had no bar mitzvah.
