Alan J. Pakula was born in the Bronx to Polish Jewish parents, Jeanette Goldstein and Paul Pakula. He produced To Kill a Mockingbird before turning to directing, and became one of the central figures of New Hollywood with the 'paranoia trilogy': Klute (1971), The Parallax View (1974) and All the President's Men (1976), the film that fixed the image of investigative journalism for a generation. He was nominated three times for an Academy Award.
