Aaron Swartz is recognized among Jewish contributors to Technology & Engineering — Co-developer of RSS, co-owner of Reddit, architect of Creative Commons licences; open-access activist
Aaron Swartz helped write the RSS specification at fourteen, built the technical architecture of the Creative Commons licences, co-owned Reddit, and campaigned for public access to publicly funded research. Facing federal charges carrying decades in prison for downloading academic articles from JSTOR, he died by suicide at twenty-six; the case reshaped the debate on computer-crime law and on open access. He was born in Highland Park, north of Chicago, to a Jewish family, the eldest of Susan and Robert Swartz's three sons.
