In 1912 the biochemist Casimir Funk proposed that diseases such as beriberi and scurvy were caused by the absence of specific trace nutrients, which he named "vitamines". This idea reframed nutrition and launched the modern science of vitamins. Funk was born in Warsaw to a Polish-Jewish family.
