The New York Times, founded in 1851, became one of the world's most influential newspapers after Adolph Ochs bought it in 1896 and gave it the motto 'All the News That's Fit to Print'. His descendants, the Ochs–Sulzberger family, have controlled and led the paper ever since. Ochs and the Sulzberger family are Jewish-American; the paper's original 1851 founders were not.
