The Kalman filter is a mathematical method that estimates a system's true state from noisy measurements, and it guided the Apollo spacecraft and underlies GPS, robotics and navigation. It was developed by Rudolf E. Kálmán, a Hungarian-born American engineer of Jewish descent who fled Europe as a child.
