The hydrogen bomb, far more powerful than earlier atomic weapons, works by a two-stage design worked out in 1951 by Edward Teller and Stanisław Ulam. Both were physicists from Jewish families who had fled antisemitic persecution in Europe; the same fusion physics also underlies research into clean fusion energy.
