The idea that space itself is expanding grew directly out of Albert Einstein's 1915 general theory of relativity, and the first equations of a dynamic, expanding universe were derived by Alexander Friedmann in 1922. Einstein came from a German Jewish family, while Friedmann had partial Jewish ancestry through a paternal grandfather who had been a baptized Jewish cantonist.
