The Diners Club card, launched in 1950, was the first multi-purpose charge card and the direct ancestor of the modern credit card. It was built by Frank McNamara together with Ralph Schneider and Alfred Bloomingdale, the latter a grandson of the Jewish founders of the Bloomingdale's department store. The card let members settle bills at many restaurants through a single account.
