The implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) automatically detects a dangerous heart rhythm and delivers a shock to restart a normal beat, saving countless lives. It was pioneered by Michel Mirowski, a Jewish physician and Holocaust survivor, whose first human implant took place in 1980.
