While small tomatoes are ancient, the modern long-shelf-life commercial cherry tomato was developed in the 1970s–80s by Hebrew University professors Haim Rabinowitch and Nachum Kedar. Their slow-ripening, sweet, sturdy variety made the cherry tomato mass-marketable worldwide.
